Athena Bertolino
Senior Associate
Athena Bertolino has a strong, international background in research, analysis, and multi-stakeholder facilitation, with more than twelve years of experience in the environmental field. Her experience spans the non-profit, government, and private industry arenas and ranges from field science and outdoor adventure education to her current work as a consultant. Since joining Ross & Associates in 2005, Athena has supported a myriad of projects in the capacity of lead facilitator, strategic advisor, and project manager. Her recent work has focused on support for a wide range of multi-stakeholder processes working to reduce diesel and greenhouse gas emissions and increase energy independence in the mobile source and fuel sectors through innovative, voluntary approaches including market-based incentives, new technologies, and collaborative communication.
Specifically, Athena has supported the development of clean air strategies for marine ports including Seattle, Tacoma, New York and New Jersey, Vancouver, B.C., and Taiwan. She was also a panel presenter at the 7th Annual Green Ship Technology Conference in Copenhagen. In addition, she has provided lead facilitation and strategic guidance to the Washington State Agriculture Sector Carbon Market Workgroup and EPA Climate Ready Water Utilities Working Group, and facilitates one-day meetings on a wide range of topics from Regional Alternatives to Agriculture and Forest Burning to the National Environmental Public Health Tracking Network.
Athena has a master’s degree in international studies and a graduate certificate in conservation biology policy from the University of Washington. She also holds a bachelor’s degree (summa cum laude) with honors in environmental science from the University of Arizona, and spent two years working in Costa Rica. In her free time Athena enjoys exploring near and far by foot, skis, bike, boat, rail, trail and roller blades, as well as supporting her beloved sports teams.
